German Accusative Case (Akkusativ) — Definition and Examples

The accusative case (der Akkusativ) is one of the most important topics for beginners, because it appears in many everyday sentences. In most cases, the accusative marks the direct object — the person or thing that is directly affected by the verb.

How to Recognize the Accusative

Ask the question Wen? (whom?) or Was? (what?) after the verb. The answer is the accusative object.

• Ich sehe wen? → Ich sehe den Mann.
• Wir kaufen was? → Wir kaufen das Brot.

Accusative Articles (der → den)
