The Genitive Case in German (Der Genitiv)

The genitive case (der Genitiv) is one of the four grammatical cases in German. It is mainly used to express possession, ownership, origin, and close relationships between nouns. While spoken German often replaces the genitive with the dative, the genitive remains essential in written, formal, and correct German.

What Does the Genitive Case Express?

The genitive answers questions such as:

  • Whose?
  • Of whom?
  • Of what?

Examples:

  • das Auto des Mannes – the man’s car
  • die Farbe des Himmels – the color of the sky
  • die Tasche meiner Mutter – my mother’s bag
