German for Beginners: Months (Monate)

In this beginner lesson you will learn the months in German (German: die Monate). You’ll also learn the most useful date phrases to talk about birthdays, appointments, holidays, and plans — plus a short practice section to help you remember everything.

Tip: the months are easy to recognize for English speakers, but German spelling and pronunciation can still feel new. Read them aloud a few times and you will improve fast.

1) The months in German (full list)

Months are masculine in German, so you often see: im Januar, im Februar, etc. (because in + dem = im).

#GermanEnglishExample
1JanuarJanuaryim Januar
2FebruarFebruaryim Februar
3MärzMarchim März
4AprilAprilim April
5MaiMayim Mai
6JuniJuneim Juni
7JuliJulyim Juli
8AugustAugustim August
9SeptemberSeptemberim September
10OktoberOctoberim Oktober
11NovemberNovemberim November
12DezemberDecemberim Dezember

2) Pronunciation tips (quick and practical)

  • März: the “ä” sounds like “air” (roughly). Say: m-air-ts.
  • Juni vs Juli: keep them clear: YOO-nee / YOO-lee.
  • Dezember: starts with a clear “D” sound: de-TSEM-ber.
  • German r is often softer at the end: Februa(r).

Don’t worry about perfect pronunciation on day one — consistency matters more.

3) Seasons + common month groups

Knowing the seasons helps you remember the months in small groups:

Season (German)EnglishMonths (typical)
der WinterwinterDezember, Januar, Februar
der FrßhlingspringMärz, April, Mai
der SommersummerJuni, Juli, August
der Herbstautumn / fallSeptember, Oktober, November

4) How to talk about months in real sentences

Here are the most useful patterns for beginners:

  • im + month: Ich habe im Mai Geburtstag. (My birthday is in May.)
  • von … bis …: Von Juni bis August ist Sommer. (From June to August it is summer.)
  • am + date: Am 3. März habe ich frei. (On March 3rd I’m free.)
  • nächsten / letzten: Nächsten Monat fahre ich nach Berlin. (Next month I’m going to Berlin.)

More examples:

  • Wir reisen im Oktober.
  • Der Kurs beginnt im Januar.
  • Mein Termin ist im Februar.
  • Ich arbeite viel im Dezember.

5) Quick grammar note: “im” and “in”

In German, you often say im Januar instead of in Januar. That’s because in + dem becomes im. Months are treated like masculine nouns: der Januar, der Februar, etc.

  • ✅ Ich bin im März in Deutschland.
  • ✅ Wir treffen uns im August.

6) Quick Practice

Do these small exercises to lock the months into memory:

  1. Translate: “My birthday is in July.” → ________
  2. Fill the gap: Wir reisen ___ Oktober. (im / in)
  3. Which month is #3? ________
  4. Write: “From March to May” → ________
  5. Write one sentence about your plans next month (use: nächsten Monat).
Sample answers
  • 1) Ich habe im Juli Geburtstag.
  • 2) Wir reisen im Oktober.
  • 3) März
  • 4) von März bis Mai
  • 5) Nächsten Monat lerne ich mehr Deutsch. (example)

Summary

  • Learn the full months list and say them aloud regularly
  • Use real patterns: im Januar, von … bis …, am 3. März
  • Group months by seasons to remember faster
  • Practice with 3–5 sentences and change one word each time
